The former Papal controller is a rival of our current, and there are plenty of decisions, papal bulls and decrees of the last Root.Monarch.GetTitle that can be made undone. This would soil the former Root.Monarch.GetTitle's reputation and make him look incompetent, which would be looked upon with gratitude and approval from our current.

Hmm, another question what happens if your the only Catholic nation left yet none of your priests are good enough to make cardinal and the pope dies? Or will he not die, and to answer the papacy being destroyed (my question is just about the pope)?I think there is the basis as the religion can't be destroyed and since that is the beacon of the cotholic faith i guess as long as you have catholic religion in one of your cities it will still be around, how bout trying to get no catholic religion anywhere? As for your theory of having no more catholics around be converting them you'd need a lot of presits to do that and don't forget, agents do age so by the time you get to a settlement and convert it to a differed religion than catholisim even if its just 1% Your presits would be dead. As long as there is a priest there is a cardinal there is a popeeven the worst, most pervert, low faith ass priest will become pope if there is none or if the current one dies.so pretty much like in RLthe safe game above the Papal states cannot reappear because there is no catholic faction and no catholic city to create a priest and the pope does not have an army or even just his general unit to take one because he died BEFORE there was a new priest who could get promoted cardinal who could get elected pope.so while technically not destroyed he is practically annhilated.
